Personal photographs

Tyler Arboretum is a beautiful location for photography. Visitors are encouraged to take photos at the Arboretum to capture beautiful scenery, colorful flowers, or priceless memories. With 650 acres of butterfly-filled gardens, open meadows, towering trees, and centuries-old structures, you are sure to find the perfect place to capture many incredible images. Photographs for personal use may be taken anywhere in the Arboretum. Our guided Photo Walks, which are free with admission, provide wonderful opportunities to join fellow enthusiasts and discover image opportunities that are not readily apparent (see Calendar  for Photo Walk schedule).

General photography and film making guidelines

Please follow our garden etiquette guidelines and rules outlined in the Visitor Guide. The Arboretum will not close or restrict any area to other guests during photo/video sessions—remain respectful of other visitors by not blocking pathways or visitor access to any area of the Arboretum. Additionally, during photographic or film making sessions:

  • Please avoid smoking or consuming alcoholic beverages.
  • Avoid walking into flower beds or otherwise damaging plants or wildlife. Do not climb trees.
  • Do not disturb or remove plants, plant labels, or containers.
  • Do not block access to the entrance, pathways, or Arboretum areas for use by other
  • Avoiding blocking or impeding access to, along, or across trails, roadways, and pathways with equipment, including lighting, tripods, and trailing cables.
  • Due to space limitations, tripod or monopod use is limited in the Butterfly House.
  • Photography at Tyler Arboretum cannot be orchestrated or used in any printed or published material, either in print or online, to imply any kind of endorsement or material connection with and by Tyler Arboretum, by its trustees, staff, vendors, or visitors.
  • Guests to be photographed or video recorded should come dressed and prepared for their photo session. There are no changing areas available.
  • It is strictly forbidden to sell or use images taken of Tyler Arboretum, which include, but are not limited to: publishing; marketing; educational materials; products and retail merchandise; general and web advertising; broadcast; or any situation where the photographer is paid for the use of the image, without a permit from the Arboretum.
  • To limit the impact of noise, distress, and the possibility of an invasion of privacy/disturbance to visitors, wildlife, and our neighbors, the personal use of unmanned aerial vehicles (aka: drones) on or over Tyler’s property is not permitted. Tyler Arboretum may, at its discretion, allow drone flights on or over Tyler Arboretum for the creation of in-house promotional material or for commercial filming (still images and video footage), but any such flights will be limited in their duration, will be restricted to specific times and locations (before or after regular opening hours and away from adjoining property), and will be publicized in advance (times, locations, and flight paths in the days leading up to and on the day of the flight/flights) via social media and at the Visitor Center.

Private portraiture

We welcome individual, family, elegant, and senior class portraits; and other photography or portraiture intended for personal use only (i.e., not for commercial use). Regular Arboretum admission applies for all individuals, including photographers and assistants.

Commercial photography

Any use, reuse, or reproduction by any means for commercial use without the express written consent of Tyler Arboretum is strictly prohibited. Catalog shoots, commercials, professional videos, and the like must be approved by the Executive Director or his/her designee and they reserve the right to refuse any project. Fees are charged for commercial photography/filming (see rates below). For all promotional, stock, and commercial photography – our general photography guidelines apply. Location approval and tripod approval is required in advance. The Arboretum reviews requests for commercial filming and photography on a case-by-case basis. Because work in the Arboretum by the gardening staff is a year-round necessity and because the Arboretum hosts many events, dates available for commercial shooting may be limited. The Arboretum reserves the right to deny any commercial shoot requests at any time. Applicants will be advised of the status of their application within a reasonable amount of time.
