Current Volunteer Positions

Invasive Plant Removal

Tyler Arboretum is forming a volunteer project / group to assist on the removal of invasive plant species here at Tyler. This group of volunteer would work in an on-going basis to remove and control invasive growth and spread in targeted areas along our trails and in our natural areas.

School Program Guides

Help school groups discover the wonders of plants, nature, and history. Assist Educators with School Field Trips and Outreach programs by leading tours and information sessions for students, preschool through 6th grade. Training is provided, and topics vary seasonally. Field trips are scheduled on weekdays year round, with the busiest seasons being spring and fall. Volunteer commitment is 1.5 hours, twice a month minimum.

Special Events Volunteer

Volunteer will assist with event set-up tasks such as setting tables, arranging food, decorating, etc. Volunteer for just one event or for several; there are about 2 dozen events per year.

Registrar Assistant

Assist staff with office tasks involved with registering participants for school, camp, and public educational programs. Training provided. Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel programs needed. Weekdays, year-round. Volunteer commitment is 2-4 hours per week depending on need.

North Woods Restoration Project

Join this dedicated group working to restore seven acre Tyler’s North Woods. This joint venture with the US Forest Service is working to demonstrate what healthy woodlands looks like without deer browse and invasive plants. Work with the Natural Areas Manager on invasive plant removal as well as data collection and entry. Training provided to learn plant identification. Tuesdays and Thursdays through the autumn. Volunteer commitment is 2 or more hours per week.

Curatorial Assistant

Help Robert Herald, in the Plant Records Office with plant labeling and inventory while learning about plants.  Tasks include checking plants for accession tags and display labels, fixing or replacing labels where necessary, and inventory work of the Arboretum’s plant collections.  If you are detail oriented, able to walk throughout the Arboretum, read a map and carry a few tools, this might be the perfect job for you.  Thursdays year-round. Volunteer commitment is 2 or more hours per week.
