GET CONNECTED TO NATURE WITH NEW MOBILE APP
Tyler Arboretum launches new mobile app that enriches visitor experience
MEDIA, Pa. (August 19, 2014) – Historic trees and buildings meet digital technology in a new free mobile app launched by Tyler Arboretum. Designed to enhance the visitor experience, this new app combines interactive activities, navigation, historical and botanical information, seasonal highlights, and easy ways to stay connected with the Arboretum.
“There is a misconception out there that says you can either be digitally connected or you can be a nature lover, but you can’t be both. We reject that perception wholeheartedly,” said Laura McPhail, communications coordinator at Tyler. “We have created an app that we believe will reinforce connections to nature with educational tidbits about Tyler and activities that you can do alone or together during your visit. Initial user feedback has been very positive.”
Together with app developer and Senior Technical Consultant Binu Nair, an employee of SAP who took this on as a volunteer project, staff at Tyler identified aspects of a typical visitor experience that could be enhanced with a mobile app, including navigation for over 17 miles of hiking trails. Nair took the information, photos, GPS coordinates and games they provided and created the string of code that turned a concept into a user-friendly application.
“Working with Binu was fantastic,” said Mike Karkowski, director of horticulture. “He was easy to work with and took abstract ideas from us, then applied his considerable skills and came up with something pretty amazing. I think our visitors are going to be very happy with this app.”
The inaugural version of the Tyler Arboretum mobile app is currently only available for Apple products. Plans for an Android-compatible version are in the works. If you would like to download this free app, simply go to the App Store on your iPhone or iPad, and search for “Tyler,” “Tyler Arboretum,” “Tyler Arb,” “arboretum,” or something similar. There is no fee for this app.
