Pancake Breakfast & Maple Sugaring Celebration

Learn how sap becomes syrup, and enjoy all you can eat pancakes!

Did you know that it takes 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of maple syrup? Or that it takes about 30 years for a sugar maple tree to grow large enough to tap? Or that the Native American name for maple sugar is snzibuckwud, meaning “drawn from the wood” and that, based on the journals of early explorers, we know that Native Americans were making syrup as early as 1609?

Don’t miss the annual Pancake Breakfast and Maple Sugaring Celebration, held on Tyler’s historic grounds. Start the morning off with a brisk walk out to one of the Arboretum’s sugar maples and learn all about tapping these treacly trees to capture their sap. The kids can try their hand putting in a tap, and offer their best guesses on some tree-tapping trivia. The tour continues to the restored stone Barn, where you’ll learn how sap is made into syrup. Then reward yourself with a hearty all-you-can-eat breakfast with the trimmings as you savor the sweet topping on your flapjacks. We offer a choice of pure maple syrup and the sugar-added variety to top your pancakes; you can choose which you prefer.

The cost for the Pancake Breakfast and Maple Sugaring Celebration is $9 for adults, $5 for children aged 3 to 12, and free for kids under 3; no pre-registration required. The proceeds from this annual event benefit Tyler.
