Director of Advancement

Tyler Arboretum seeks to hire a senior-level fundraising position familiar with the Delaware Valley fundraising climate and with demonstrated experience in securing major gifts and managing success capital campaigns to serve as its first full-time Director of Advancement.

The Director of Advancement will report directly to the Executive Director and will provide support and coordination to all aspects of a comprehensive development program at Tyler Arboretum.  The Advancement program at Tyler includes fundraising, communications of the organization’s fundraising priorities, initiatives and constituent relations.

The Director of Advancement will work closely with the Board of the Trustees and its Committees with responsibility for fundraising (Advancement Committee [formerly Development Committee], MGI Committee, event committees, etc.) and will assist the Executive Director and other senior staff in maintaining communications with the Board of Trustees and all constituents with a stake in fundraising.

The Director of Advancement will take a leadership role in formulating and documenting strategies and plans for Tyler’s fundraising activities and will manage a staff of five. The Director of Advancement will assist the Executive Director in formulating, generating and presenting regular reports of fundraising activities to the Executive Director and, at the Executive Director’s direction, to the Board of Trustees.

Specific Duties

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director in crafting, documenting and implementing a comprehensive fundraising program that will support a more robust individual giving program that focuses on major gifts and develops a new pool of prospects who will support a future capital campaign.
  • Support the development, documentation and implementation of an annual work plan for fundraising activities.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director and the Board of Trustees to formulate and document a comprehensive master plan for the Arboretum.  Ensure that fundraising plans and associated activities are consistent with the long-range plan.
  • Support the Executive Director and volunteer leadership in the identification, cultivation and solicitation of major individual, corporate and foundation gifts.
  • Organize and support volunteer leadership, the Executive Director and other senior staff in their interaction with prospects.  Participate with them in cultivation and solicitation when appropriate. 
  • Conduct and disseminate research related to prospects, donors or other constituents and opportunities.
  • Staff Board committees related to fundraising and manage their activities.
  • Have direct interaction with top prospects and those who need to play a role in prospect cultivation (Board members and non-Board Committee members).
  • Prepare all necessary correspondence, stewardship reports, proposals and other materials needed to facilitate cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of gifts.
  • Support the development of policies and procedures for the Tyler’s fundraising program that are in keeping with best practices as well as the organization’s overall policies and procedures approved by the Board of Trustees.
  • Assist the Executive Director in crafting and implementing a case for support to promote Tyler Arboretum and its specific fundraising priorities (MGI) in the community.
  • Design and oversee plans for the Annual Fund program; use as a platform for additional giving to Tyler by individuals.
  • Assist the Executive Director in maintaining communications with the Board and constituents related to fundraising (donors, prospects, key volunteers).
  • Prepare periodic reports to the Executive Director and the Board of Trustees on the status of fund raising activities.

Required Skills, Capabilities and Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success as a fundraiser (gifts raised, prospect pool developed, campaign planned, implemented and successfully concluded, etc.).
  • Ability to set and achieve challenging fundraising goals.
  • Superior organization and administrative skills.
  • Superior social and communication skills needed to manage mid-level staff.
  • Confident with the basic protocols and practices of fundraising including planning, budgeting, solicitation, grant writing, financial reporting and event planning.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Raiser’s Edge.
  • Knowledge of fundraising related research procedures and tools; able to conduct searches to identify major gift prospects, granting opportunities and other sources of funds. Knowledge of strategies and trends in fundraising that will proactively and creatively grow Tyler’s fundraising efforts (i.e. planned giving).
  • Experience with volunteers and in the effective use of volunteers in fundraising activities.
  • Ability to function independently, yet participate in and contribute to a team effort.
  • Ability to maintain all information with appropriate confidentiality.
  • Familiarity with and physically able to travel in the local area.

Visitor Center Associate

Responsibilities include:

  • greeting visitors
  • processing admissions
  • gift shop sales (using a cash register)
  • registering people for our education programs

Qualifications needed:

  • Enhusiasm
  • Good people skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Retail experience is helpful

The position is part time (between 15 and 20 hours a week, which vary by season, and includes weekends and some holidays).
