Nature Explorers Summer Camps

Tyler Arboretum's summer camps connect kids and nature as campers explore our unique and diverse ecosystems. Enthusiastic, highly-qualified staff and low student/teacher ratios facilitate fun, interactive learning with projects, games, crafts, hikes, and naturalist-led learning sessions.

Camp Details:

Young Explorers

Camps are full-day programs (9 am - 3 pm) for children ages 6 to 11 (participants must have completed first grade).

Campers are grouped according to their ages, and the decision of the camp staff is final. Children should bring their own snacks beverages and lunches.

Tiny Trackers

Camps are half-day programs (9 - 11:30 am or 12:30 - 3 pm) for children ages 4 and 5. Children should bring their own snacks and beverages.

  • Extended childcare is available for Young Explorers campers for an additional fee. Early drop-off is offered from 8 to 9 am, and after-care from 3 to 5:00 pm. Campers must be pre-registered for this service. Fee: $10 per hour/fraction, or $60 per week.
  • Dress for the outdoors as portions of each program are held outside in fields and forests, along streams, and at the pond. Additional information will be sent upon receipt of registration.
  • Volunteer opportunities are available for Junior Counselor volunteers (minimum age of 14). For more information, call the Volunteer Coordinator at 610-566-9134, ext. 205.

Critter Camp, June 23- 27, 2008

Young Explorers: 9 am - 3 pm
Tiny Trackers: 9 - 11:30 am, or 12:30 - 3 pm (NOTE: both sessions are full)

Owls, foxes and frogs – oh my! Tyler ’s 650 acres contain a wonderful abundance of diverse habitats, with lots of animals to discover. Explore the world of the spotted salamander in the wetland, groundhog in the meadow, or a red fox in the forest and learn why each creature is important to our environment. Become a detective while searching for clues of what type of animals call Tyler home!

Aquatic Adventures, July 7 - 11, 2008

Young Explorers: 9 am - 3 pm
Tiny Trackers: 9 - 11:30 am or 12:30 - 3 pm (NOTE: AM session is full)

While exploring in the streams and ponds on the property, you will discover how many critters live in or depend on water habitats for survival. Get your feet wet, search for crayfish and learn where all of the water goes. You will also find out how clean the streams are and how you can help the Delaware Bay !

Strive to Survive, July 14 - 18, 2008

Survival is the name of the game in nature. Not only do plants and animals have unique ways to survive, but so did our ancestors! While exploring Tyler , learn why a vine climbs, a tree looses leaves, and birds migrate. Survive like a Native American and make your own shelter. Read a map, and find your way around by using a compass, the sun or even your watch!

What's That Bug?, July 21 - 25, 2008

Explore the world of pollinators, insects, spiders and other creepy crawlies that live at the Arboretum. They are everywhere: underground, rotten logs, and even in the tops of trees. Discover the many fascinating bugs by sweeping the meadows with nets, scooping up stream water, turning over logs, and digging in the dirt. Learn where bugs live, how and what they eat, and the many ways they can be helpful to us!

It's Wonderful Being Green, July 28 - August 1, 2008

Plants are important for people and animals. They give us the oxygen we breathe, the food we eat, the shade for the stream, the habitat for animals, and fuel for our cars. Discover what makes pizza taste so good, hike through the meadows and forest, and explore the ways that plants help us and the environment. Get your hands dirty in the garden, look for worms, press leaves and flowers, and make a Garden Journal!

Nature Art, August 4 - 8, 2008

Young Explorers: 9 am to 12 pm (Campers must be ages 7 - 11 for this session)

From the earliest cave dwellers painting on their walls, nature has inspired artists. Come and discover the many faces of Mother Nature and let your creative juices flow as we capture nature’s beauty through painting and drawing, working with clay, crafting with natural materials, writing, and photography. While looking at plants, insects, and animals with an artistic eye, we will discover amazing facts about how our world grows and functions and connect with outdoors on a new level.

Registration:

Registration is limited to Tyler Household and higher member categories January 1-February 15.
After February 15, registration is open to members and non-members.

Registrations are accepted in the order in which they are received.
Registrations can be mailed or faxed to Tyler, phoned in, or brought to our Visitor Center
