Gardening & Horticulture
Tyler offers a variety of seasonal workshops, lectures, guided bird walks, wildflower and other rambles, historic building tours, and off-site field trips.
Registration Information
Pre-registration is required for all programs unless otherwise indicated. A full refund will be given if the Arboretum must cancel or reschedule a program due to inadequate enrollment, instructor illness, or inclement weather. We will make every reasonable attempt to notify you if a program is cancelled.
A $3 administrative fee will be charged for each program cancellation that you initiate. A full refund, less the administrative fee, will be given with a minimum notice of two weeks. A 50% refund will be given with a minimum notice of one week. NO REFUNDS will be given with less than one week's notice.
Full payment must accompany each registration. Payment may be made via check or charge; VISA and MasterCard are welcome. To register: print and mail/fax the registration form (see link to the left), call 610-566-9134 ext. 215, or stop in.

Vegetable Garden Planning
The joys of successful vegetable gardening start with a plan!
We all know home-grown veggies taste the best. Now that we are becoming more aware of the advantages of eating locally and living more sustainably, nothing is more local than a walk out the back door. Growing our own food is also more economical and nutritious.
Whether you want to grow a few tomatoes, or really go into production, this workshop gives you all the information you need to get a great start on your 2010 garden. Master Gardener and avid vegetable gardener, Leslie Trimble, discusses location, soil preparation, seed starting, plant selection and culture.

Cool and Unusual Veggies
Ready to move beyond tomatoes and green beans?
Have you been intrigued by some of those strange veggies in the seed catalogs? Join Ann Mattingly, a self-described lover of the weird and wonderful in the garden and the kitchen. Learn how to grow – and prepare – kohlrabi, Jerusalem artichokes, Asian greens, kale, tomatillos, parsnips, leeks, and a few other oddball vegetables. Class will conclude with delicious treats to taste.

Planting for Nature
Plan your landscape and help the earth, too.
Before kicking off the gardening season, discover ways you can help the earth, as you plan additions to your landscape.
Even a small property can make a difference in regional environmental quality. Tyler's upcoming Arbor Day Plant Sale, features numerous ecologically beneficial plants.
Join Tyler's Director of Public Programs, Betsey Ney, for an informal evening looking at how gardening choices help to create a haven for birds, amphibians, and other wildlife, as well as basic practices that improve local stream habitat and water quality.

Small Space Vegetable Gardening
Many attractive and affordable options are available for small spaces
Even if you have very little space, as long as you have sun, you can grow vegetables.
Growing in small garden spaces, containers, hanging baskets or window boxes, are all ways to grow and enjoy delicious veggies. Join Master Gardener, Bob Bechtold, for a review of small space options, appropriate plant varieties and techniques for success.

Dividing Perennials
Learn specific hands-on techniques to divide a variety of perennials
Before going to the garden center, take a look for plants that can be divided. Dividing perennials keeps them healthy and if you don’t need them for your own garden, you can share with friends. In this hands-on workshop, Tyler Gardener, Matthew Tornabe, teaches specific techniques that guarantee success with a variety of plants. Participants receive plant dividends to take home. Dress for outdoor weather and for working with plants. The program will move inside in the event of inclement weather.
